🔹 Hebron, New York
Hebron, NY is where Daniel Clement (1796-1872) and Martha Whedon (1809-1869) lived in the 19th century and where their children were born. Their house was in West Hebron, which is part of the town of Hebron, so both "Hebron" and "West Hebron" appear in records. West Hebron is in Washington County, which also includes Cambridge. Hebron is about 15 miles north of Cambridge.
Clement Homestead
My archives include the following photo, labeled "The Clement Homsdtead [sic], West Hebron, N.Y. August 1938. Over 100 yrs. old."
I don't know the exact location. The Library of Congress has a map of Washington County that includes this detail of West Hebron, showing property owned by "D. Clemmens" at the center of the detail portion below:
A moden map of the area shows that this would be on Ferguson Lane:
As of 2022, neither Google nor Apple street views have visited Ferguson Lane (Google street view shows it accurately marked as a dead end, but not private or otherwise restricted). Aerial views indicate that current buildings on Ferguson Lane match the locations of the 1853 map.
Clements in Hebron
- Daniel Clement (1796-1872) was originally from Dracut, MA. I don't know exactly when he moved or why. 📄 Letter to Daniel Clement from Bartlett, Jan 18 1829 indicates that he was still in Massachusetts at the time, and 📄 Letter to Daniel Clement from Jesse Clement, July 17 1837 puts him in Hebron.
- Daniel Clement and Martha were married in Hebron February 23, 1832 and all of their children were born in Hebron, so Daniel had arrived in Hebron by that time.
- Their daughter Rachel Perham Clement (1838-1920) was born in Hebron and married Daniel Harrington (1834-1917) there in 1863. He is recorded as living there in 1860 (US Census) and 1865 (NY State census). They both soon moved to Cambridge.
Whedons in Hebron
- Martha Whedon (1809-1869) seems to have lived in Hebron all of her life.
- My archives include the 📄 Whedon property transfer, 1843, in which James Whedon (1771-1846) transfers his property to his son James J. Whedon (1822-) and his wife Mary M. Forbes (1836-). The elder Whedon was Martha Whedon (1809-1869)'s father. This probably isn't the same house described above but its location isn't specified and is currently unknown.
