Margaretha Wild (1829-1915)

Margaretha emigrated from Bavaria to New Orleans in 1847. There she met and married William Cyrus Torrence (1824-1857), with whom she moved to Texas. After her husband's death she returned to New Orleans with her children.

From Audrey Torrence Bachman's "Torrence Family":

Margaret Wild Torrance left Texas to return to her family in New Orleans to rear her children. After many years spent sending affidavits to the War Department, she was granted a widow's pension, first for $8., later raised to $12. Her papers and affidavits are in the National Archives under the Mexican War pension records. She lived for several years with her son John William and died in 1915. She was buried in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Unsourced stories found on Ancestry, posted by user kbachman43, include the following details:

  • "[[Amanda M. Torrence (1826-1907)]|Amanda]] and William Gray Torrance seem to have been instrumental in creating the records and submitting them so that Margaretha would be determined eligible for a widow's pension based on William Cyrus's service during the Mexican War."
  • Margaretha took in laundry to support herself in New Orleans after her husband's death.
