William Cyrus from the west side of the Red River in Lavaca County, Texas wrote his brother in law John Wild in New Orleans about losing a steer worth $25 in Texas to a herd being driven to New Orleans across the Red River (in LA).Β The letter gives a detailed descripition of the steer and its brand and asks John to go to the stockyards to search for it.Β $25 was a very large amount at that time and it appears the steer was used to plow their field so this left William Cyrus needing to do that himself.Β At the bottom there is a note to John in German from Margaretha Wild describing their troubles and the fact they cannot plow without the steer.Β See origiinal letter attached to his information and translation of Margaretha's note and separate letter.
