George L. Tone: retired patent lawyer
George L. Tone, 78, a longtime Scarsdale resident and retired patent lawyer, died at his home Monday after a brief illness. Mr. Tone worked for the GAF Corp. in New York City for many years before retiring about 26 years ago.
He was born to Sumner and Blanche Torrence Tone in Pittsburgh on Oct. 24, 1908. He graduated from Washington & Jefferson College in Washington, Pa., in 1930 and from George Washington University Law School in Washington, D.C., three years later.
Mr. Tone belonged to Lambda Chi Alpha, a fraternity. In 1943, Mr. Tone moved from Philadelphia to Scarsdale. He was a member of the Scarsdale Town Club and a former member of the Westchester Hills Country Club.
He was also a member and ruling elder of the Hitchcock Presbyterian Church in Scarsdale.
He is survived by his wife, the former Ellen Hootman of Scarsdale, and his son, David of Arlington, Va.
Another son, Thomas, died earlier.

George L. Tone, a Scarsdale resident for 44 years, died June 8 at his home at 15 Ridgecrest North. He was 78 years old.
Born in Pittsburgh, Pa. Oct. 24, 1908, Mr. Tone graduated from Washington and Jefferson College in 1930 and George Washington Law School in 1933. Prior to his retirement in 1961, he was a patent attorney with GAF Corporation in New York City.
Mr. Tone was a ruling elder of Hitchock Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the Town Club, Westchester, Hills Country Club and Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity.
He is survived by his wife of 52 vears Ellen Hootman Tone and his son David of Arlington, Va. Another son, Thomas, died in 1962.
A memorial service for Mr. Tone will be held at Hitchcock Presbyterian Church Friday, June 12 at 1:30 p.m.
