James F. Torrence (1901-1972)
An obituary reads:
James F. Torrence Jr., 71, a retired Army colonel and former vice president of Federal Services Finance Corp., died Tuesday in Walter Reed Army Hospital after a long illness. He lived at 7211 Bybrook: Lane, Chevy Chase, Md.
Col. Torrence was born in Rochester, Pa. He was graduated from West Point in 1923.
During World War II, Col. Torrence served in North Africa and Italy on the operations staff of the allied forces headquarters. In 1949 and 1950, he was commander of the 15th Infantry Regiment at Ft. Ben- ning, Ga., and was comptroller of the Ft. Benning Infantry School from 1950 to 1952. He headed the logistics staff of the Pacific Command from 1952 until his retirement.
Col. Torrence joined the Federal Services Finance Corp. upon retirement from the service in 1954. He retired from the company as a vice president in 1966.
Col. Torrence was awarded the Order of the British Empire, the Croix de Guerre with Palm, the French Croix de Chavalier of the Legion of Honor, the Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster, and the Order of the Crown of Italy.
He leaves his wife, Dorothy S.; a son, Ronald W., of Bethesda; and three grandchildren.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday at Ft. Myer Chapel with burial in Arlington Cemetery.
