Margaret Harvey (1722-1817)
- Ancestry records show her living her entire life in New Jersey, however see notes below that indicate she arrived in America from Suffolkshire, England in about 1740.
This painting of her is similar to one of her husband John Tone (1719-1791)
The label at the bottom reads:
MARGARET TOAN
Wife of John Toan, Esq, of New Jersey
Married in Freehold, N.J. in 1742Painted by
Matthew Pratt (1734-1805)
This painting isn't mentioned in the letter Frank Jerome Tone wrote about the portrait of John Tone but it was probably acqured by him at the same time.
The Tone D.A.R. Manuscript says in part that
- Her sister Hannah Harvey (1724-1789) "bequeathed a considerable portion of her property" to Margaret's daughter Mary Tone (1759-1822).
- Margaret, along with her siblings and father, came to America in about 1740.
-
It's not completely clear which of John Tone (1719-1791)'s children were also Margaret's children, but that since her sister's will mentions Margaret's daughter Hannah Tone (1747-1849) that probably all of John's children up to Hannah were Margaret's children. It follows this by saying that
as to whether the rest of the Toans went without mention because of lack of blood tie, or whether there was a disaffection between aunt and neices and nephews which young Hannah alone did not share, we can but conjecture.
Records found at Ancestry are consistent with this, since John Tone (1719-1791) seems to have married a second time while Margaret was still alive, and since some of his children were born after that marriage date.
