Andrew Tone (1742-1820)

The Tone Book says that Andrew Tone was a revolutionary war soldier.

Revolutionary Soldier, enlisted Feb. 12, 1776, Private Capt. Peter Dickerson's Co., 3rd Battalion, New Jersey Continental Line. Stationed at Ticonderoga, winter of 1776-1777. Re-enlisted Jan. 8, 1777 in Maxwell's Brigade. Battles of Brandywine and Germantown; wintered in Valley Forge 1777-1778,

It's not clear how accurate this is.

  • Frank Jerome Tone (1868-1945)'s application for membership in the Empire State Society, in which he traces ancestry back to Andrew's father before claiming a revolutionary war connection.
  • Frank Jerome Tone (1901-1978)'s application for membership in the Sons of the American Revolution also traces back to Andrew's father, but also notes "Andrew Tone (Tome) also served in Revolutionary War (see page 299 of Official Register of Officers and Men of New Jersey in Rev. War; alsom Muster Roll - Mas.3705-3774 (page 40))"
  • The Official Register of Officers and Men of New Jersey in the Revolutionary War (1872) lists an Andrew Tome, which seems to be where the FJ Tone SAR application got its entry from. Possibly a misspelling in the book? The entry there reads

Third Battalion, First Establishment; Captain Dickerson's company, Third Battalion, Second Establishment

Some notes on the details in this entry:

  • "Maxwell's Brigade" may refer to the 2nd New Jersey Regiment, which fought at the battles of Brandywine and Germantown, among others. They also deployed in New York and Pennsylvania.
  • "New Jersey Continental Line" is the New Jersey Line refers to infantry regiments in New Jersey during the US Revolution, as part of the Continental Line. Wikipedia also notes that

Under the command of Brigadier General William Maxwell, it was also known as "Maxwell's brigade"...

  • Ticonderoga is in New York, one of many locations where New Jersey soldiers were deployed during the war.

  • It doesn't seem likely that this would have qualified Andrew for land in the Central New York Military Tract (see info at John A. Tone (1768-1825).
