Nettie Starr Clement (1852-1930)

Married to Duane Howard Clement (1846-1908). Born in Vermont, lived in Brooklyn as an adult.

The archives have the following related to her:

• Program from graduation exercises at Glenwood Ladies' Seminary, 1868. The last page, under "MUSIC", lists "COMPOSITION--The Golden Hour" by "Miss Starr"
• Documentation of the revolutionary war service of Comfort Starr. I haven't traced Nettie's family history to connect the two people, but no other Starrs appear in the family tree.
• Incomplete and possibly unfiled applications for DAR and SAR membership, which includes genealogical details.
• Menu from the Starr family reunion on December 17 1924, which includes signatures of Preston Meeker Harrington Sr (1871-1942) and others.
• Marriage certificate, to Duane Howard Clement (1846-1908), dated Sep 26 1889 at Brattleboro, VT.

• Her will, dated March 19, 1929. This includes a detailed list of household items like paintings and glassware intended for specific people and includes the following entries:

  EIGHTH: I give and bequeath to my husband's nephew, PRESTON M. HARRINGTON, the sum of Ten Thousand Dollars ($10,000.), and the following: black marble clock on mantel in upstairs living-room of my residence; and oil painting of horses in front hall,

  NINTH: I give and bequeath to each of my husband's nieces, ALICE WINSLOW and ANNIE REYNOLDS, the sum of One Thousand Dollars ($1,000.)

  TENTH: I give and bequeath to my husband is nephew. EDWARD HARRINGTON. the sum of Five Hundred Dollars ($500.)

  ELEVENTH: I give and bequeath One thousand Dollars ($1.000) to each of my following named grand-nephews and grand-nieces, and the grand-nephews and grand-nieces of my husband, who shall survive me, to-wit: RALPH WALTERS STARR, DOROTHY WALTERS STARR, PARLEY STARR CRESSY, NORMA BELL CRESSY (formerly, now married), MORON STARR CRESSY,JR., WADE BLANCHARD CRESSY, DUANE CLEMENT CRESSY, RUTH SANDT, DANIEL HARRINGTON and PRESTON M. HARRINGTON.JR.

  TWELFTH: All. the rest, residue and remainder of my property, real and personal, of whatsoever nature and wheresoever situate, of which I may die seized or possessed or to which I may be entitled at the time of my death, or over which I may have power of appointment or in which I may have any interest, including all lapsed legacies, give, devise and bequeath to JAMES RALPH STARR, MORTON STARR CRESSY, ARTHUR JEWEL CRESSY and PRESTON M. HARRINGTON or to such of them as shall survive me, in equal shares, absolutely and forever.

  • At the time of her death, $1000 was worth the equivalent of about $17,700 in 2022. The financial bequests add up to $55,000, equivalent to roughly $1M in 2022, and this doesn't include property or the household items.
